It's now been 6 weeks since we met our sweet Kalid and Abuzaid! They are such an amazing addition to our family and I can't imagine our lives without them now! So, people are always asking how their English is coming along. I have no idea what the time frame is supposed to look like for actually speaking in sentences and having coherent conversations with them. But for only being exposed to English for 6 weeks, they're doing SO well!
I would say Abuzaid has about 50 words; Kalid a little less probably. But they use them in short sentences. "No touch" is still a favorite of theirs (and they'll say it to each other now too- this is within the last few days that they'll speak to each other using English). They have lots of animal names down. Lots of things like brush teeth, more, all done, bye bye, I love you, outside, etc... They still use a lot of Amharic words (and so do we- Landon told me the other day that he's kind of forgetting what some of the English words are for the ones we use Amharic for all the time). Kalid loves to say, "Kalid-i baby"- yes we certainly all know Kalid's the baby of the family!:)
Kalid is also famous for going to the bathroom right before we leave the house or wherever and then a few miles down the road saying, "Shinty potty". (shinty is the 'baby talk' version of shint which means 'pee'). He has proven that he will go in his car seat if not taken somewhere quickly! I usually tell him 'almost there'. So tonight, we were driving home from Denver and he had just gone and we were going to stop somewhere half way home for dinner. So he shouts out, "Shinty potty" and Abuzaid says, "Almost there!" He really tries to imitate a lot and his vocab. is growing every day. Very fun to watch!
Abuzaid was also singing his "ABC's" today and did them all! That dog ABC book that we read every day, twice a day is paying off! They love reading the same books over and over and over again. I know how great it is for their language acquisition, but I'm kind of ready to move on to new books:).
So that's just a little update for today. We went to our agency's picnic today and had a great time with the other families and also just with our family- train rides, wading in the creek, playing- good day! I'll post pics some other time!
